Our Wednesday dining group of 10 ate at Pomodoro’s last nite. We were motivated by their Wednesday nite special – 1/2 price bottles of wine. The wine list was surprisingly good and our waiter made some excellent recommendations. In addition, the food was quite good and the atmosphere just fine for a group of friends who enjoy dining out.
Here’s the strange part ~ we usually get separate checks and this evening, we had all the wine put on a totally separate check that we would all chip in on. Usually, in Asheville, the restaurants will add the gratuity to a large party or when asked for separate checks (apparently they don’t trust their patrons to treat them fairly) and an 18% gratuity was added to all checks. Upon review, the separate check for the wine had the 18% gratuity added to the original cost of the wine, not the 1/2 price. In effect, Pomodoro’s was adding a 36% gratuity. I protested to the waiter, who brought the manager. The manager asked “do you have a problem with this?” The manager was instructed to remove the gratuity and he did so, we left 20% on the wine check.
If the bottles were split up among the many separate checks and the gratuity was added, we might never have noticed. Also, if it was a smaller party without separate checks, does Pomodoro’s add the gratuity based upon the original cost of the wine or do they just penalize larger parties?
We had a very nice meal, very good service and plan to return ~ but will examine our checks very closely.
