Pomelo - Thai and Vietnamese (Burlington)

Pomelo recently opened up in a spot previously occupied by First Choice Chinese. I have been so disappointed with Thai and Vietnamese in Burlington that I have been avoiding this place for several months. Invariably, dinners were glorified chinese at exhorbitant prices. I have not been able to find a decent Thai place since My Thai was in their Pearl Street location. (The new location on Lakeshore is terrible.)

Well, a couple of people in my office tried Pomelo and recommended it.... so I did. Well, really glad that I did. My SO and I had a thoroughly enjoyable dinner there on Friday. Now, this place will not rival a place like Mengrai Thai in Toronto that serves more traditional Thai food, but given the typical fare served up at Thai restaurants, this will be my go to place.

We started with a red curry spring roll. It was very crispy and had a wonderful hint of curry flavour with shrimp and vegetable stuffing. We shared three mains:

Beef with Oyster Sauce - a delectable dish served with King Oyster mushrooms and a rich flavourful, oyster sauce. The beef was melt in your mouth tender. This is the best version of this dish I have had anywhere.

Pad Thai - This was the best pad thai I've had outside of Thailand. It was made the right way, not tomato based but using tamarind. It had a lovely lime overtone that completed the dish. We chose the shrimp/chicken version and enjoyed every bite.

Shrimp with Garlic Sauce - about 10 jumbo shrimp served with a tasty garlic sauce, cellophane noodles and some greens on the side. The veggies were forgettable but the shrimp and sauce were good, though not great.

I would definitely order the first two dishes upon a return visit, but am looking to try many other items on their menu.
