Pleasantly Surprised at Grand Cafe (Long)

Marie | Feb 26, 200609:00 PM     1

Grand Cafe in the Hotel Monaco has had its ups and downs but I wanted Chowhounds to know that we had a very good dinner there for 8 people who ranged in age from 81 to 14. Standout dishes included the truffled french fries, duck cassoulet with lots of white beans and a nicely arranged vegetable plate made up of their rich side courses - roasted brussel sprouts, cauliflower au gratin, spinach with bits of apple - which the server improvised for a vegetarian guest. We also liked the arugula salad with almonds and date bits. Steaks, sea bass and desserts were all fine. Service was very attentive - not always possible for a large party on a Saturday night - and they cheerfully wrapped up all the leftovers for us since portions were huge. Even the bill was less than we expected. Did we just luck out or has the chef/manager changed there yet again?
