1. The former Buddha's Dream space at 2002 Sawtelle (next to Mizu 212 Shabu-Shabu), is now a little Vietnamese place called Hanoi Cafe. They apparently opened today, and were handing out menus at the door. Very simple choices--pho with beef, chicken, or tofu; bun with or without steak and shrimp; a few varieties of spring roll and egg roll; banh xeo, and that was it. Still, given the limited choices for pho on the westside, it's good to have another one; will have to try soon.
2. Shiro's new venture is going in a couple doors further to the south in the same minimall, in what used to be a clothing store called Sue Mills. The permit information on the door has the name "Shiro, Inc.," so this seems pretty definite. The name of the restaurant (per a paper sign taped to the window) will be something like Orisso--but I didn't have a pen with me and now I can't remember the exact name, sorry. Since this space was not a restaurant before, it is a long way from being ready, and on the door was a "notice of disapproval" from the building and safety department, dated 6/10/04, listing more than a half-dozen problems, so it might be a while before he can get this open.
