The Place on West 10th (Summer Special)

We tried the "summer promotion" prix-fixe tonight. They're offering 3 courses for $20.06 from 5:30-7pm. Kind of early bird-ish but it turned out to be worth checking out. Here are the choices. My opinions follow.

-Yellow Tomato Gazpacho w/ Avacado
-BAby Arugula Salad w/ shaved parm & must seed dressing
-Char-grilled Calamari & Shrim over a fennel & greek yogurt slaw and papaya

-Herb Roasted Free Range Chicken w/ mash potatos, french beans, and sherry wine
-Char Grilled Salmon w/ baby spinach, white beans & balsamic reduction
-Roasted Tomato Risotto w. asparagus & truffle oil

-Warm Apple Tart w/ cinnamon ice cream
-Creme Brulee w/ lavender essence
-Trio of fruit sorbets

Te new Place (well new to me - I hadn't been there yet) has got a nice vibe goin on. It's pretty hip & loungey and I can see it being more of a fall/winter place based on the lack of daylight, but on this sultry summer evening it was a perfect escape.

I had the calamari/shrimp app: nice charred skewers, though a little over salted. Loved the slaw/papaya and how it interacted w/ the grill flavored seafood. Pretty damn good!

My wife had the gazpacho: really refreshing and tasted just out of the garden. Nicely seasoned. Excellent!

I had the chicken: very tasty but simply too heavy and comfort food like for a summer dish. very fresh chicken, nice veggies, but the "sherry wine" was really a gravy. Good!

My wife had the salmon: she said the salmon was delicious, i don't like salmon (I know, I know...)so cannot comment, but the white beans and spinach in the balsamic reduction was totally addictive. Pretty damn good!

I had the tart: it's even better than it sounds, not a tart so much as thin flaky layers of pastry covered in delicately sliced apples in a little stew of goodness, topped off by subtley cinnamon ice cream. Excellent!

My wife had the creme brulee: Wow! Shockingly good! Excellent?

Overall a really great bargain. Mostly a thumbs up on the food, save the heaviness of some of the choices. The service was very warm and friendly, with just a couple of glitches as we had to flag our server down for drinks (and a fork). But both servers that were working were so incredibly delightful it didn't really matter. I'd say give it a whirl. I'm not sure I'll go there and eat off the regular menu as it gets a little pricey, but this deal shouldn't be missed!

Sorry - that's a long post!
