The recent posts on Louisiana Fried Chicken once again reminded me that I wanted to try Our Place, located at 21st and Franklin (a block from LFC)..so, when a coworker and I were looking for a new place to lunch, we headed over.
Bottom line: I plan to put this one in my regular rotation for a cheap and tasty lunch. (which is more than I can say for Louisiana Fried Chicken). Moreover, I hope other 'hounds do to: there isn't a heck of a lot of choices in that immediate area (other than Luka's of course, for when one wants something a little more upscale), and sadly, the place was almost empty the entire time we were there. It certainly deserves better!
Our Place bills itself as Caribbean and Soul Food. Lunch plates are $4.50 each, and come with one main item and one side, which is plenty of food. Extra sides in generous portions are $3.00. We got two lunch plates, one extra side, and two drinks, and were stuffed. We had:
BBQ Meatballs: five generous meatballs in bbq sauce. I had to try these, since meatballs are my obsession. They were quite tasty, firm but not dry. The sauce was tomatoey and homemade: it smelled delicious but was too sweet for my taste. Presumably they use the same sauce on the bbq chicken: I'd ask for some hot sauce on the side to cut the sweetness.
Curry Chicken: pieces of chicken breast meat in a yellow curry sauce. The chicken was a bit overcooked, but the sauce was nice (and not too sweet). The server brought an entire extra bowl of sauce on the side.
Rice and red peas (white rice and beans cooked in coconut milk): very good, just a bit of bite.
Mixed collard, mustard and turnip greens: these were yummy. Waayyy better than the greens at LFC.
Other items I'd like to try include orange stuffed with sweet potato, black eyed peas, cornbread, and Jamaican beef patties. The non-banana-phobic among you might be interested in the fried plantains, which came highly recommended by our server (but since I don't eat bananas in any form I can't vouch for them....)There is no fried chicken on the lunch menu, but they do have jerk chicken.
To drink we had housemade sorrel and housemade ginger beer, both in tall glasses. The ginger beer was served flat, which I didn't expect, but it was excellent. I've never had sorrel before; co-worker who has says this was a very nice version.(It tasted like a fruit juice to me).
Service was very sweet and efficient (we waited no longer than 5 minutes for our lunches) and if anything perhaps a little too solicitous (not surprising given that the place was empty).
They serve dinner also, and do take out. Recommended for a simple, good, spicy meal.
