Pistachios from sidewalk vendors

Vic | Dec 20, 2003 06:16 AM

I have a friend who visited New York in the '60s and says one of his strongest memories is buying great pistachios from sidewalk vendors.

I've never seen this -- the candied nuts are big now, of course -- but were pistachios a big item from sidewalk carts at one time? Or did my friend happen to run into someone who was randomly selling them?

An admittedly trivial question but I'm fascinated by this guy's obsession with the pistachios and the evolution of the fare offered by the sidewalk vendors.
