Why do my pinto beans taste sweet?

PhotoMike | Dec 4, 201509:58 PM     13

I wanted to make low fat refried beans from dry pinto beans and I was looking to mimic/improve upon canned refried beans. My beans tasted good but they ended up tasting pretty sweet and I can't figure out why. My recipe is below. How can I avoid having sweet refried beans in the future?

Ingredients:
1 cup organic dried pinto beans, unsoaked
3 cup water
2 small yellow onions, diced
6 cloves garlic, minced
1 tsp. vegetable oil
1/2 tsp. Penzey's chipotle powder (contains no sugar)
1/2 tsp. kosher salt
1/2 tsp. oregano
1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper powder
1/4 tsp. ground black pepper
pinch cumin

Ingredients were added to a pressure cooker, cooked for 30 minutes at 15 psi, then allowed to cook. Once the pressure was released, I mashed the beans were mashed. The resulting flavor was good, but oddly sweet. Help!
