Guther's is a Sacramento ice cream maker that opened April 1940.
Ice Cream Mania (near Lucky) in the shopping center off Apian way sells Gunther's.
The pumpkin and rum raisin ice creams are often mentioned as some of Gunther's best.
To me Gunther's has been a little on the sweet side. Then I got the inspiration to ask for a shake with the pumpkin ice cream and it was sheer goodness.
The milk takes the sugary edge off and results in a nicely spicy, pumpkiny, clean-tasting shake. One of the first culinary signs of fall for me next year will be this shake.
The nice thing about Ice Cream Mania is that they will make a shake from any flavor or combo of flavors ... milk, ice cream ... malt on request ... that's it ... excellent.
Interested in a peppermint and chocolate combo shake or peanut butter cup / banana ... whatever you like, Ice Cream Mania will make a shake of it.
As far as the ice cream itself ... I thought the rum raisin was like the rest of the ice cream, a little sweet. Not my favorite rum raisin.
For me Gunther's falls somewhere in the middle of the multi-flavor ice cream makers.
It is not as good as Mitchell's, Bud's, Silberman's, Marianne's or Maggie Mud. It is almost the equal of Liled's but a notch below. It is about equal to Loard's. It is better than Double Rainbow, Joe's and Baskin Robbins.
Of course these ice creams are in a different class from the joints like Bi-Rite, Ici, Three Twin's, Screaming Mimi's, Downtown Healdsburg Creamery, Fairfax Scoop, Citizen Cake or Sketch (though the last has reduced flavors to about a half dozen.).
The first group I think of as working class ice cream ... the latter, upper class.
IMO, Gunther's ice cream-wise is middle Middle Class ... respectable.
I wished I liked Gunther's more than I do. The current owner started as a clerk at the store and worked his way up, eventually buying it from the second owner (The Guthers sold it in 1989). The original 1940's recipes are being used. The ice cream has 16 % butterfat and according to the site ...
"uses a slow, hand-controlled "Batch Freezer Method" to process their ice cream. This method is similar to the hand cranked ice cream machines used in the early 1900's ... The use of higher butterfat and the combination of slower processing produces a richer, creamier ice cream."
They also say they use all natural ingrediants but I'm not sure what that means. Maybe no HFCS or preservatives. I want to like them A LOT more ... I plan to check out the spumoni.
Guther's also sells ice milk which they call Lite ice cream ... "Lite Ice Cream, also refered to as Ice Milk, is made with 5% Butterfat"
Ice Cream Mania also sells freezes (coke or root beer blended with ice cream), coke or root beer floats, smoothies and sundaes. Custom ice cream cakes are available
