Ping's Bistro opened a year ago. I first became aware of it when I stumbled on photos of some dishes on an incomplete website http://blog.findkeeper.co/#blog . I was struck by the artfulness of the presentation, Three of us tried it for lunch last June. I included two dishes, Sliced pork belly in spicy garlic sauce and Chairman Mao's braised pork in this pork belly round-up,

Ping's menu is a big picture book beautifully illustrated with food porn.

Yet, remarkably the presentation of the dishes did live up to their boudoir shots. Here's a look at the Sliced pork belly in spicy garlic sauce, $9.99, again. And it tasted as wonderful as it looks.

Sliced pig ear in chili oil, $8.99, wow'd us too.

Sauteed vegetable with minced pork, $9.99, featured mustard-y greens with a delicate crunch and peppery bite. Loved the batons of tender young ginger root and the bits of pork acted as additional seasoning.

The dish we were most curious to try was the Raw snowflake beef shallow cooked in chili oil, $22.99. Prepared at the table, this starts off as a platter of highly seasoned slices of fatty beef and a some sliced shallots in chili oil.

The chili oil mixture was heated in a table-top wok, then used to saute' a portion of the beef and a whole lot of cilantro.

The final result has the texture and color closer to oil-poached meat. Too bad it did not pick more of a seared character. This was a huge amount of meat for our small party and perhaps best ordered for a bigger group.

The one dish we would not order again was Shredded chicken cold noodles with fresh cucumber, $8.99. The chicken breast meat was cottony and dried out and the noodles were mushy.

Total with tax and tip was $97 for two cold appetizers, one vegetable dish, two meaty large dishes, and one starch. That's the usual amount one would order for three people, so this came out on the high side for lunch. Still, we were impressed by the quality of the cooking and the service at Ping's Bistro and look forward to returning.
