As usual, I made my Thanksgiving trip to Skowhegan, Maine last month. A highlight any time of year is always brunch at the Pickup Cafe. It's associated with the CSA for that area and their meals reflect the diversity of farmers, dairy folk, and other food producers. Everything is so fresh and tasty.
I ordered "Eggs Your Way": two eggs sunnyside, home fries (you can substitute baked beans), with two sausage patties. The eggs were fresh from the farm and the sausage, too. I love a good rye bread, so I asked for rye toast and received a buttered hunk of fine toasted rye. Without the sausage, the price is $5, with, $7.
My sister had eggs with house-brined corned beef hash. The coffee refills just keep coming.
Skowhegan is on the way to somewhere, possibly white water rafting in the warm months and Sugarloaf, for skiing now. But it's not far from Waterville, where Colby College is. If you're a student or parent of one, I can highly recommend Pickup for a special breakfast/brunch, Sat. & Sun. 7 a.m - 2 p.m. They serve dinner on Fri. & Sat., although I haven't been to dinner…yet.
