Pickles and beer in Socal?

Went to Hollingshead Deli last night for dinner and beers, after hearing good things from my homebrewer friends. What a suprise...

Hollingshead is located in a strip mall and looks like your typical mom & pop liquer store. It isn't. They are known for two things: the deli counter and the beer.

When you walk in you are greated by someone with a Chicago accent (everyone who works there is family). Place your order for a sandwich and a beer, then look to your right.

A bar?

Yep, a bar. They have twelve rotating taps of local beer (the good stuff) and a "take home" department amongst the tables of great six packs. They don't serve or sell Bud here, don't even ask.

As I chat up Ken, the owner, and get his history about the place, he directs me to his pickles. Ok, that didn't come out right, but you get the idea.

They make, on the spot, AMAZING pickles. I have always been a fan of the bitter foods but these pickles are rump kicking good. Bitter but flavorful. Crisp with a hint of spice. Savory but not overpowering. Good.

If you are in the area of Santa Ana and want to kill a few brain cells and have a good sandwich and sides, Hollingshead is it.
