This may be old news to some of you, but I believe Peter Chang has already left Szechuan Boy (China Gourmet). Since reading Tom Sietsema's "Weekly Dish" column (March 29) on Chef Chang's fantastic Szechuan cooking, I have been a convert - frequently traveling the 5 miles from my home to get a taste. This evening, however, when I called the restaurant to place a to-go order off of the "special, Chinese/Szechuan" menu, I was informed that the chef "was gone". The phone conversation was a bit muddled, and I was left confused as to whether Chang had left for the day (and thus no more orders were being taken from "his" menu), or if he had left for good. I unhappily ordered from the regular menu, and then rushed over to investigate.
When I got to the restaurant, I spoke with the hostess and she confirmed that Chang had "quit" on Sunday night. She noted that he "drove her boss crazy," and at times would refuse to cook things the way the customer had ordered. She referenced the fact that recent articles on Chang's cooking (my guess Tom's article, the Washingtonian piece, this board) had driven a lot of people into the restaurant, and that Chang's "ways" made things difficult.
Has anyone else heard of this? I just hope the hostess was mistaken or that Chang and his boss have patched things up.
