I had dinner at Pepe Rosso to Go tonight around 5:30. I definitely reccommend it, the food was some of the best italian I've had in the city. We had a salad with oranges, tomato, and goat cheese, the prosciutto sandwich with arugula, tomato, and mozzerella, and the penne with some kind of tomato sauce, chicken, and mushrooms. The salad was pretty good, but nothing amazing, although the greens had a nice kind of nutty flavor. The sandwich was great, the prosciutto was really flavorful, and not the kind that is so hard that it all rips out of the sandwich on the first bite. The pasta was the best thing by far, cooked perfectly al-dente. The sauce was simple enough that the freshness really showed, and the mushrooms added a great flavor. Both the bread that the sandwich was on and the bread served with the pasta were soft and fresh, very different from the crusty italian bread you usually get in restaurants.
They only have a few tables, and it seemed pretty clear from the numerous signs on the walls that the management wanted you to eat and leave quickly. One sign even said, "Eat fast! You choke, we do heimlich."
Pepe Rosso To Go is on Sullivan St. between Prince and Houston.
