I visited this popular "lor mee" spot in Lorong Selamat in early Dec, but didn't think of posting about it until I got into a "best lor mee in Penang" debate with a couple of KL-based but Penang-born colleagues over dinner recently. My personal favorite lor mee spot in Penang is the 54-year-old stall at Hai Beng Coffeeshop in Pitt Street:
But both my Penang friends insisted that the best version was at Fong Sheng Cafe on Lorong Selamat. The noodles at Fong Sheng were a mix of yellow Hokkien noodles and thin "bee hoon" rice noodles, blanketed with thick, gooey, sticky brown-colored "lor" gravy. Ingedients included braised chicken feet, pork belly, hard-boiled egg and pig's intestines. Everything's been slow-cooked till soft and melt-in-the-mouth tender. Spicy-red chilli paste and pureed raw garlic paste were served on the side. Local diners tend to add liberal amounts of both condiments into their bowls of noodles. Very tasty indeed but - apologies to my Penangite friends - I begged to differ & still preferred my Hai Beng lor mee fix.
