This is one of the most atmospheric dim sum places in Penang (if not Malaysia) - Tho Yuen, one of those restaurants that have been there for as long as I can remember. Located next to the historic Kwong Tuck provision store (famous for its dried goods imported from Guangdong) on Campbell Street, old Cantonese patrons would sit around the restaurant sipping strong Chinese tea from little porcelain cups, whilst trays of dim sum are served from as early as 6am.
By late morning, the dim sum would have been replaced by its famous Hainanese chicken rice stall. My earliest memory of a chicken rice meal at Tho Yuen stretched back to the 1960s, but the restaurant must have been there even before the Second World War.
Their selection of dim sum was good: all the usual suspects present - but you need to come early. Their egg tarts were legendary amongst Penangites.
The whole dining hall oozes an air of nostalgia. I simply love this place to bits :-)
