[PDX] La Michoacana

Went to a favorite taqueria in Vancouver, La Michoacana. It's in the concentrated stretch along 4th Plain that includes Tortilleria y Tienda de Leon, Poncho's al Pastor, several Mexican markets, and several other Mexican restaurants.

I'm on a tight budget until we get our credit card paid off, so if I want to go out, it's a lot easier with a coupon. Had one for La Michoacana, which is already a cheap eat.

Got a couple of items I hadn't had before there. Had their birria ($6.50) which is a large bowl of rich, heavily seasoned broth with tender stewed meat. It comes with fresly made tortillas. This is a good version.

The specials here are often quite good. It's the only taqueria where I've ever seen tamales de elote (fresh corn tamales sometimes called uchepos), which were excellent. Today, one of the specials was empenadas. In this case, the empenadas are made with masa, ie, hominy flour, not wheat. Essentially, these are the quesadillas I most like, where it's not just a folded tortilla. You had a choice of fillings, either chorizo or requeson (ricotta). I chose the latter. It came with a nice spicy salsa verde. It was very good and only a $1.75.

Wife got a combo platter with a sope, taco, beans, and rice. All were good.

It's my third favorite place on the stretch, but that only shows how strong the stretch is. btw, they usually have carnitas and several guisados (stews) sitting in a deli case through the door to the connected market. They're usually very good.
