I'm a Seattle Chowhound coming down to Portland with my folks over Thanksgiving wkend. My dad is a used book dealer in KY and wants to go to Powell's (the mecca) and see a new city.
As usual, there are too many places I want to eat and not enough time. And I don't know the city very well which makes planning difficult. Looking for mid-priced places to eat - folks are pretty adventurous.
So here's where we're going to be (for sure), suggestions in the area??
Penzey's spices at 11322 SE 82nd Ave
*** Have NO CLUE what area of town this is? Any thing good we should try while in the area? Or any sights to check out?
Staying at Silver Cloud in Nob Hill:
* Any good breakfast places within walking distance?
* Any good places for Belgian beer or just with a good beer selection and no smoking?
The Pearl (Powell's etc):
Have been thinking Karam's, Pearl Bakery, maybe Noble Rot.
*My local friends recommend Nicholas' - say they've never heard of Karam's. How does Nicholas' stack up?
Going to the Lewis and Clark exhibit and maybe the new exhibit at the Art Museum.
Also, thinking of doing one expensive meal (my 35th birthday, God am I old now) at either clarklewis or Gotham Building Tavern. Opinions??
Thanks in advance for your suggestions. I've printed off extramsg's food tip sheet but am having a hard time figuring out which areas of town house which good foods. Great suggestions though! Think I should bring the big pants.
