Thought I'd write in to say that the long "dessert drought" on Main Street, Middletown, CT has seen some improvement. In the past, the only pastry or cakes that you could find were shipped in to local coffeehouses from other places. As for the restaurants, it's mostly been mediocre, though some of them baked their own decent desserts.
But there are two pieces of good news on the scene: the tiny Fusion Bakery in the back of Main Street Market actually makes their own stuff, and its very inventive and tasty. I'm not sure what it's called, but I had a cup with delicious sponge cake & cream & berries, that you had to eat with a spoon. Pastry and scones are quite good too.
The second addition hasn't really come of age yet -- the people who bought Brewbakers are pastry chefs, trained in Austria, and are supposedly going to be altering the menu there to include their own stuff. For now, it still seems to be a bagel and sandwich place, though.
And what of the holy grail? Do we have a place that combines creative ambience & comfort, homemade pastry, excellent coffee? Um...I'm still searching for that!
