Should this party have been canceled?

Last week I was invited to a former classmate and his wife's home for what a Final Four party. The host and I went to university years ago, and have not necessarily remained close. But we now live in the same city and are friendly.

About an hour before the party, he texted me to ask if I was coming - I said yes. When I showed up, it was just myself, him, and his wife. Their plan for this party had clearly just been to watch the games regardless if one or ten people showed up, as food was largely from a take-out place plus chips and salsa.

I'm no longer very close with my former classmate and had never met his wife before - and the evening was definitely a bit awkward particularly into the second game (I left during the second game's halftime). So my question - what should a host do in such a situation? When I got the text, I would have loved to get a heads up that I would be the only guest and given the chance to bow out. But as a host of a less formal party, at what point should a host accept it's not going to happen and cancel?
