The Parkway Tavern in the Stadium District of Tacoma

Olympia Jane | Jan 4, 200312:35 AM

Met a friend tonight at the Parkway Tavern in the Stadium District. I had never been there before, and my friend described it as the perfect English pub, Tacoma style. I agree, definitely a neighborhood joint, but a cut or three above your typical Tacoma or Olympia tavern. Having said that, I do enjoy The Swiss very much, but it has gotten so big over the years, and so popular, as to be almost too much of a scene.

First of all, the Parkway is a non-smoking establishment. Apparently the owners thought they might bring about their demise by going non-smoking in Tacoma, but it worked and they appear to be doing quite well. Secondly, it is small, but not too small. Friday night had lots of folks standing around the bar, but only because they wanted to be there, as there were a few empty tables and plenty of chairs. Third, they had a good selection of brews on tap, including one of their own brews, a winter beer that I chose as my night's beverage. Very good and a tad bitter, just what I was in the mood for on a rainy night.

And last, but not least, The food! Now, maybe it was just the Steak 'n Shake thread on the General Topics board that had me craving a burger the past few days, but whatever the reason, I chose a jalapeno burger as my night's fare. It was fabulous! (Nothing resembling a Steak 'n Shake commercially thin burger though.) Thick, juicy, grilled burger, lots of tasty rounds of jalapenos melted under the cheddar cheese, perfect bun (not soggy, thick slices of tomato and lightly shredded crisp lettuce. It came with a big green salad, all for $6.95. Hugemondo portions, I was able to eat half the burger and I was a very happy camper. Gee, sometimes there is just nothing better than a half a really great burger, a pint of beer, a rainy northwest night and a chance to catch up with an old friend. The old friend had a hot "Thai Chicken" sandwich, something that looked very tasty and he swore was the best thing on the menu, but I was entirely too obsessed with the joys of my Jalapeno Burger to even want to try a bite of his sandwich.

Nice crowd of folks, friendly bartenders, I will definitely be going back.
