"PARADISE Fine Chinese Cuisine" – Not everything 'heavenly,' something actually borderline 'hellish'!

With two of our potential dining venues – ‘The Emperor ‘ and ‘Skyview Fusion’ both booked for wedding functions and our third option, ‘Judy’s Cuisine’ closed for vacation…. or for good? We decided to give ‘ Paradise Fine Chinese Cuisine ‘ on Finch and Leslie a try. Their Dim Sum lunches has been consistently good. As such, we were all hoping their dinner offering will be at least at par?

Due to the proximity of the Mid-Autumn Festival and being a weekend, the place was jammed packed even at 6.30 pm! With a relatively low ceiling, noise level was approaching agonizing!

In addition to our pre-ordered dishes of ‘ Roasted suckling piglet paired with shredded Jelly Fish ‘ and ‘ Hand Held Oil Poached Crispy Skin Free Range Chicken’, our party of six also ordered the following:
- Soup of the Day – Gourd, Sun dried Octopus, Shitake mushrooms and pork soup
- Fried crispy giant Scallops and Asparagus with spiced peppered salt
- Braised Tofu with Shitake Mushroom and Broccoli.
- Fried Jumbo oysters with peppered honey sauce.

Quality of the food was erratic and inconsistent.

The bad included the ‘lack of wafer crispiness’ roasted suckling piglet skin. In fact, a number of us unfortunate ones, actually picked up a few tough and chewy slices! Look definitely deceives here! The ‘ Tofu and Shitake Mushroom’ dish was totally under-seasoned. Bland and tasteless, we believe the stressed chef responsible for this dish must have totally forgotten about adding salt or the key seasoning ingredient..Oyster sauce?! The ‘ Fried Jumbo Oyster ‘ looked promising and appetizing. Sadly, though the texture was good, the sauce was way too salty. Talk about inconsistency!

Thankfully, the meal was rescued by a couple of nicely executed and stand out dishes. The delicious ‘Fried Scallops and Asparagus ‘ were grease-less with crispy batter and moist, juicy interior. The savory and not-too-spicy seasoning was spot-on. The ’hard to find’ oil poached crispy free range chicken was well seasoned and delicious. The majority of the fowl was tasty and moist with gossamer thin crispy skin, though, a few small, isolated pieces of white meat were a bit dry and overcooked.

Based on ‘ faked information’ from one of our party member that no complimentary desserts will be handed out in this restaurant, we ordered three a la carte ‘ Baked creamy Tapioca pudding ‘ to share. By the time they arrived at our table, the now, less busy staff suddenly showed up with an array of ‘complimentary ‘ desserts !! The end result was a dessert over-kill scenario spiking my daily sugar intake level to scary level!

Last but not least, when our bill came, we were stunned to see, for the three bowls of rice we ordered, they charged us a whopping $6 per small bowl!! Culinary Highway Robbery?! A chat with the manager got us an apology, a rectification of the mistake, waiving of our BYOB corkage fee and a special 10% off the total bill! A rare and very nice gesture on the management part!

However, with such inconsistent cooking, extremely slow service and loud noise level. Though management’s attitude and approach to its patrons were courteous and commendable. A re-visit in the future needs careful evaluation.
