Stopped at Pao Brazilian Bakery on the way to the Ashland Fair. Huge selection of sweet and savory goods. Since almost nothing was labeled and the very patient counter girl didn't speak much English, we resorted to the point and smile method of selection and ended up with a couple of surprises. The standouts were the giant dulce de leche-stuffed churro. Incredible - so fried, cinnamon-sugary and oozy in the middle. Those could easily become a regular habit if we lived closer. Also fantastic, but from the savory side, was a small puff pastry turnover packed with tiny shrimp, sliced olives, fresh cilantro and red onion. Mmmmm... The most unusual thing we tried was a sort of thick corn custard tidily wrapped in corn husks. The ingredients of the package said: corn, salt, butter. They had the same thing sweetened and I may have misunderstood the server but I think she said they also sometimes make them with cheese. We ate it right out of the refrigerated case, but I bet it would have been even better slightly warm. Other items - a pretty plain/bland chicken pie thing, a toothsome coconut ball decorated with a whole clove, a soggy sorta sour-tasting flan-like tartlet, and a container of custard which we haven't tried yet. Despite a couple of misses, a chowish spot.
