Today, just because it was a cold day and we had nothing better to do four hounds meet at Best Panda in San Francisco. It was Chowfun's idea.
We had remembered the a post by Gordon Wing a while ago. Cynthia had been the only one that had been there before.
This was a very interesting place in that they had a lot of Chinese signs on the wall. But with each sign in Chinese there was a nice English translation. On which there was no stopping Chowfun. He of course wanted to order everything in sight. But Mrs. Yimster quickly put him in his place.
We ordered the following dishes with a lot of input from me and Chowfun:
Deep fried quail at a super cheap price of 1.88 each. These were local fresh quails cooked to perfection. Just cooked just through. I am guessing they local fresh one because of the size. Normally the frozen one are much smaller. The were the size like the one we get from Man Sing on Grant Ave.
Watercress with Silver and Gold Eggs, this was a nicely al dente cooked watercress topped with a stock cooked fresh eggs, minced preserved duck eggs and some tofu. We were given a choice of watercress cooked three ways but this the one I wanted.
Salt and Pepper Local Crab, very good. Almost on a par with R&Gs (not at good but not far off). It was not oily and the flesh just stuck to the shell was a real treat. The price was another treat, 6.88. At this price we should have had two. But one was more than I could eat.
Lastly we had Veal Ribs with OK sauce. This Chowfun order because we not just him wanted to know what OK sauce was. This was a version of Peking Beef Ribs where sweet black vinegar is used as the base for the sauce.
Cost of this meal per person was 8 buck each. A great meal and even better company.
I forgot to get a menu to go but I did see a lot of cheap dinner for 10.
