Until last week, I'd never paid attention to Panaderia y Tortilleria La Mexicana, tucked away on a hard scrabble block of East Market Street. It was closed during Thursday's strike and I returned Saturday morning to make a purchase.
A few grocery items and a small display of pan dulces are in the front. You ask the counter lady for the tortillas and she'll grab them from the back. The two customers ahead of me were buying large flour tortillas, the kind for wrapping burritos, that looked very thin and supple. My 60-count, 29-oz "taco pack" bag of 5.5" wide corn tortillas was fresh and steaming hot for $3. The tortillas are made with Maseca flour. So far I've used them to make enchiladas and a green chile strata.
