Just got back from a 5 day trip to the peninsula. We moved to Santa Barbara from Menlo Park area 4 years ago and I was struck anew by the difference in the 2 places and my preference for SB food and coffee these days. First, what is up with the lack of decent espresso/Cappucino's in Palo Alto and Menlo Park? We found the best at Zombie Runner on Calif ave, but they only serve in paper cups (blech) and have odd hours. SB has 3 great coffee spots (2 French Presses and Handelbars) and they are the same size town as PA. Menlo Park has nothing except Starbucks and Peets and passable Cappucino's at Borrones. SF has great spots and I like Red Rock in MV, just not convenient for this trip. I do hear Blue Bottle is opening in PA in a new building on Alma.

My other frustrating experience was eating at Pizzeria Delfina in PA. We got there, put our name on the chalk board and then waited and waited and watched the poor hostess spend most of her time erasing and moving names up and around the board. Extremely inefficient and after waiting 70 minutes, I realized that my name had been erased but not put back on the board. We were finally seated inside after 90 minutes of waiting and I didn't really care how good the food was at that point. Will not be returning until they get their reservation system worked out. Maybe it works in SF, but not worth the hassle.

We also ate at Portola Kitchen in PV and had good pasta and a great lunch at Mediterranean wraps on Calif. Ave and my fave salmon capriccio salad at Borrones for another lunch. Had a so-so brunch at new Lure and Till in PA. They need more egg dishes on brunch menu. Our last meal was Draeger's to go sushi. Love MP and Palo Alto, need better coffee and food.
