Palm Springs report (longish)

Tom Hall | Apr 17, 2004 11:18 PM

Brief reports: I am a lousy typist and this is from a visit in Feb for a meeting. All of these were found in Chowhound posts from the past 18 or so months. All are in Palm Springs except as noted.

Europa- Nice spot, ate out back. They do not break any new ground here but the duck was very well cooked and tasty. Pedestrian wine list with mediocre stemware. Rather young and and less than stellar server. Corkage was $15. Overall it is fairly expensive but I was glad to have eaten there.

More Than a Mouthful- Had a late breakfast. Pretty mediocre and high priced. Indifferent server and lousy coffee. Would not go back.

La Crepe- I really like the French couple here and the food is pretty good. Excellent QPR and just a fun, well run place. I have not had the greatest food here but my 'houndly friend has really enjoyed his dishes- I must try something besides the cassoulet but I am a sucker for that dish.

LaPalupa (Cathedral City)- Truly a local spot and hard to find. Had a both a shrimp and a fish taco (first time for each). While the fish was very good, the shrimp taco was stellar and I would go back again and again and again for those... I wonder what the big goblets of seafood with red sauce were? Those looked great.

Kalura Trattoria Italiana- Had a very good calamari appetizer. Mains were acceptable and for PS was priced OK. Lousy stemware and, again, indifferent service. We were on the patio where they allowed SMOKING which kept rolling over us. For that alone, I won't go back.

Others I had considered were John Henry's and Hedi's but were closed on Sundays. Food choices seem to be slowly improving in PS but food overall seems more midwestern than west coast USA. Thanks to the 'hounds for the tips- LaPalupa is the real find here and is priced right.
