I went to a new little place on 55th and 30th in Ravenna (I think) last weekend and was totally impressed. Small, chef/owned and very warm atmosphere. Menu does the tapas thing, but is very reasonable, most dishes in the $6 to $8 price range. Wines were mostly about $6 a glass.
Our table had tuna nicoise salad made with fresh tuna, a duck special (my mom who's never had duck before had it and loved it), lamb loin served with a tapenade and merlot reduction, gougeres (dainty little cheese puffs-very airy and light), and sauteed greens (pretty spicy tasting sort of chinese greens that the chef picks up from u-district farmers market). Everything was really delicious, generous tapas sized portions. Highlights included desserts. Tried the banana bread pudding - very light, not stodgy at all, and an incredible strawberry rhubarb galette - a little free form pie stuffed with a tart mixture of rhubarb and strawberry. Loved everything. I hope these people succeed and I wish my neighborhood had such an unpretentious and cheerful dining experience.
