Outstanding Shabu-shabu in Lowell

Just came back from a wonderful meal at Pho 88. They have recently started serving Shabu-shabu (there is also another name for it on the menu, presumably Vietnamese, but I forgot what it was).

Their shabu-shabu is as good as anything in Boston - no need to drive in for this any more. Very reasonably priced, with the top choices (Prime rib-eye) around $15.00, and lesser options as low as $8.00. A basic veg/noodle (shirataki) plate is included, but a la carte smaller side dishes are available at $2.50 each.

We had a split pot with 2 broths - Kim Chee and Tom Yum. Both were very good, full of flavor - we had the Kim Chee extremely spicy and the Tom Yum mild. We ordered the prime beef, pork, the surf&turf, and a number of side dishes, including some inoki mushrooms and tofu. The surf & turf included a few beef pieces along with a selection of salmon, squid, scallops, and some fish balls and a different fish cake. They had a lot of watercress in their veggies, which we enjoyed.

Everything was fresh and delicious. I couldn't recommend this more. The chef came out and asked us to give him input - they were just starting the Shabu-shabu and whatever suggestions we could give would help - I told him this was as good as anything I'd had in Boston, NYC, or Tokyo.

Pho 88 is in a strip mall off of Drum Hill, off Rt 3 at 1270 Westford St. The Shabu-shabu is only available at night.
