New Orleans on a tight budget

JonJon | Jul 3, 200411:15 PM

I'm going to be staying in town for two weeks (near the LSU Medical School), taking a vacation, but on a very tight budget. In fact, normally I wouldn't even take such a trip under these circumstances, but I have to use some flight vouchers by Aug. 15 or I else lose them. Meanwhile I just moved and that sucked the bank account almost dry. I guess I'm singing the blues!

In any case, I'd love to hear about places where I should seek out great, unique to NO, yet value-minded grub. I'll have all the time in the world, so I don't mind taking the time to meander to some hole-in-the-wall or off the beaten track places. In fact, that's what I like... hidden gems. Yet I'm sure I'll find myself in touristy areas as well. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Also, if you know of any day trip destinations with a chow reward, please let me know. I now live in Arizona, so I'd love to see some water!
