Orin Apple

Joel Teller | Nov 8, 2003 11:21 PM

Today I bought some organic Orin apples, a variety new to me. They were 99 cents a pound at the Berkeley Bowl.

The apple looks like a green Golden Delicious. The flavor is very unusual. It is a sweet apple, with low acidity, and it has a lot of fruit esters in the aroma -- like pineapple or Juicy Fruit gum. Quite delicious. Probably a poor choice for cooking, since it lacks tartness. It also turns brown soon after cutting.
