The Original Hot House from Playland Popping Up [San Francisco]

Melanie Wong | Jan 10, 201611:36 AM     2

Yesterday a shy 'hound forwarded the link below to The Original Hot House from Playland facebook page with info on an upcoming pop-up lunch on Saturday January 30. Take-out orders will also be available for pick-up. Eric, the son of Juan Faranda who was the final owner of the Hot House, has resurrected the old recipes. Frank Dunnigan penned a great account of the restaurant's history (January 2014), up through Eric's tackling delivery orders for Hot House classics.

The Hot House was in business from 1934 to 1996. At it's peak, Dunnigan stated that it served up to 12,000 tamales in a weekend! I never had the pleasure of eating at the Hot House, but other chowhounds are nostalgic for the red sauce or the signature cup-shaped tamales. And late baked French bread instead of tortillas accompanying the plates.

The pop-up lunch is held at Al Masri restaurant on Balboa @ 42nd, across the street from the Hot House's final location. Here's the take-out menu from the first pop-up this past summer,

This venture seems to be flying under the radar of our food media, as I couldn't find much chatter about these lunches other than the FB page. Has anyone attended who can tall us more?

To reserve lunch or take-out, email Hot.house28@yahoo.com with a phone number. And please give us a full report here!
