Oppa's opened their doors this past Friday. Located in Malden Center in the former location of the venerable Massimo's Restaurant on Pleasant Street.
I stopped in for lunch yesterday just to give it an early look, as this will be the closest Korean Restaurant to my house... a fact which fills me with glee.
The menu is broad, with a variety of choices from a multitude of aspects of Korean cuisine. Familiar items, like Dolsot BiBimBap, Bulgogi, Galbi, mandu are there, along with some more interesting choices like kimchi jigae, soondu, gam ja tang, ddukbokki and more. I asked for a carryout menu so I could study it but they don't have them yet. Additionally, you will find some Japanese items on the menu, like Sashimi salad, teriyaki and four different versions of Ramen.
I was by myself yesterday so I kept it simple and ordered the Spicy Pork Bulgogi Dolsot BiBimBap. The BiBimBap was great. Just as you would expect and served with a raw egg on top. I would have liked some more Bulgogi, but overall the dish was very successful. It's served with banchan and was supposed to come with Miso Soup. The soup was never delivered but, since Miso Soup is Miso Soup wherever you go, I didn't press the issue.
There is clearly a "Bar" focus to Oppa's. They have a large selection of soju and sake, large screen TVs and a Jaeger dispenser. They plan to stay open until 1AM. I am looking forward to visiting them again and sampling more of the menu. I can't wait to hear about others experience.
