A few evenings ago a friend and I were deciding between Opera and Rice and ended up at the former. Big mistake, at least for me. I had a very disappointing meal which cost me $43 - that was my share. I started w/ a bresaola and mixed greens salad. It had two maybe three very thin slices of the meat, a scant slice of pear, but a lot of fresh greens w/ a tasty vinaigrette. Certainly not worth the nine bones, though. My main course was cod and squid served in a tomato broth. If there was any tomato in mine I missed it because the liquid was a hot and weak but spicy concoction that did nothing for the dry but plentiful pieces of fish. The calamari was tender, but again boring.
Interesting my dining companion had a 180 degree different experience. He started w/ a wonderful kale, garlic, and potato soup. His main course was a wonderful plate of meats: pork chop, kielbalsa, and a garlic sausage. It was tasty and plentiful; so much so that he didn't finish.
The amuse bouche (sp?) was two toothpicks each with a black olive, a green olive, and two small cubes of cheese. Olive oil was drizzled on them as well. They came w/ two small, round and crunchy cracker "things." Tasty, but boring.
Anyway, I would like to go back because what he had really did look good but dammit, 43 dollars later and a terrible meal to boot doesn't incline me to give it a second go around.
If anyone's been there since the place became Opera I'd like to hear about your experience.
