Had a fabulous dinner at Oleana last night, despite some trepidation caused by recent lukewarm reviews here. Perhaps there are good nights and bad nights?
Buttered Hummus with Basturma was an incredible combination of flavors and textures. (Basturma is a thin-sliced cured (?) beef.)
Persian Lamb Kebobs are the ground meat variety, complexly spiced with contrapuntal accompaniments. Goat Cheese and Asparagus with Moorish Vinaigrette was more interesting than it sounds the vinaigrette was good enough to make us want to lick the plate and deliciously spiced although we had no idea what the spices were.
Lamb Steak with Fava Bean Moussaka came out perfectly medium rare and the moussaka was amazing put the church ladies moussaka at the Arlington Greek Festival in the shade and that is really saying something!
Frozen Chocolate Mint Soufflé and Chocolate Tartlet with Mint Salad was a very refreshing non-sweet end to a wonderful meal.
Everything we put in our mouths really sang, with a great mix of flavors and spicing, with the sole exception of the bread, which was totally pedestrian. We shared the lot and squabbled (nicely) over the last bite of every single thing. Service was pleasant and well-paced. I couldnt have been happier with the whole experience (well, if only the bread lived up to the rest).
