The location formerly known as La Trattora in Santee is now Okawa Steak House & Sushi, and we decided to give it a go tonight. While I was (and still am) very sorry to see La Trattoria close its doors, this new spot is a welcome addition to our little corner of the county. They cook hibachi (read Benihana's, Shogun), if you like, but also accommodate non-hibachi diners with tables and, of course, the sushi bar. With the hibachi meals you get "hibachi soup", salad, veggies, noodles, shrimp and steamed rice. Should you desire fried rice, it's a couple of dollars extra. The soup was peppery-good deliciousness, and a great starter to the meal. The salad was nothing special, but the dressing was pretty gingery (which I loved). While we stuck with the standard steamed rice, the chef gave us a taste of the fried rice, since it was our first time there. Normally I reserve fried rice for a quick home dinner, but this stuff was good! My hubby ordered the samurai steak, which was cooked perfectly to medium-rare and delicious (I stole a bite). I had the pineapple calamari, also perfectly cooked (it was a test - I hate when they cook it to a rubbery consistency). Our daughter stuck with sushi rolls - the vegetable roll (avocado, cucumber, gobo, radish & sprouts) and the Morning After Roll (baked shrimp, asparagus, avocado, cucumber & soy paper), and really liked both of them. Presentation of the rolls was beautiful. All in all, a nice addition to the dearth of good restaurants in Santee. We'll be going back.
