Obana vs. Kabuto + a sushi question...

jkaww | Nov 20, 201409:59 AM     12

I am traveling to Tokyo next year and hoping to get some advice on a few places I'd like to try.

I am looking for a good unagi shop - have been to Nodaiwa before and was pretty unimpressed. It seems like Obana and Kabuto come up in a lot of discussions of top unagi shops and I was wondering if somebody might be able to educate me on the differences between both places and possibly make a recommendation. I can read some Japanese, but generally need an English menu to order a full meal (unless it is omakase).

I am also looking into booking a meal at Dai San Harumi. I noticed there are a few devotees of this sushiya on this board, so was curious if Nagayama-san serves every diner, or if it is his apprentice (or of course, if this doesn't matter). I know his previous apprentice recently left so was wondering if this resulted in any change in quality or the overall experience there. I also understand the lunch course is very different than the dinner course there and was curious if this also meant Nagayama-san is only serving there during dinner.

Appreciate any advice!
