First off, thanks for the pre-vacation advice, some of which I was able to follow. Not a real chowish trip, we ate way too much hotel food, but those resorts are so big, it takes longer to get to your car than it does to drive to your destination sometimes. My daughter and I learned the most important rule of plate lunch - ASK IF IT'S SERVED WITH GRAVY! I had to avert my eyes when passing the shrimp trucks in Kahuku - we couldn't stop - but the trip was not without highlights. The best plate lunch I had was surprisingly in the Dole Marketplace in Honolulu: 5-spice chicken with chinese broccoli in oyster sauce and some really good crispy noodles and rice. The macadamia cream pie at the Kau Cafe in Naalehu on the Big Island was worth the drive through the desert. It had a brown sugar layer on top of the crust. We did Roy's in Waikoloa - they do have a good kids' menu - enough for both my kids to share along with an app. order of ribs.
