Anyone else catch the NYTimes.com article in this week's Dining & Wine section about the doomed farmers' market in the Ferry Terminal?
Reporter Kim Severson, whose star source in the story is Alice Waters, suggests that tourists are a double-edged sword since they mob the terminal and graze the fresh freebies but they don't actually buy fresh produce from the organic farmers.
The suggestion is that because "the line between a tourist attraction and a working farmers' market is very fine," the organic farmers will ultimately be squeezed out and replaced by vendors who sell tourist-friendly tsotskes thereby helping to cover the cost of a reported $90M renovation.
Is the place overrun? I haven't touristed it yet.
