For once, there was no line out the door at Newport Seafood, so I stopped in to try salty fish w/chicken fried rice. Only previous experience with salty fish was when I almost mistakenly threw it out of my uncle's fridge.
I picture the origin this way: starving villager grabs dead fish out of the sea, thinking, "Maybe if I cure it with enough salt, I can eat it and not get deathly ill!"
Didn't see any bits of salty fish in there, but it "perfumes" the dish, and every so often, among the smoky bits of rice, scallion, shredded lettuce, and chicken, you get a salty tang of pure FUNK. Once is enough for me.
Taro smoothie was just chalky enough to let you know it's real taro and not Torani. $208 banquet menu looks awesome, will have to put together a crew on the Yahoo group.
