I have some questions about the meat substitute product “Neat.” (The questions are below in a list.) I am asking here because there is no FAQ on this product’s website, the company that makes the product doesn’t have an e-mail address for me to contact, the only contact methods are a physical address and social media, and I don’t have social media accounts (or any desire to create any).
1. How long should I bake this in the oven if I made it with water (but no oil) and formed it into patties or a steak shape as opposed to “Neatballs”? (Any approximation/guide of how long to cook it based on the thickness I packed it into would be greatly appreciated.)
2. If this product is only prepared with water, does it have to be refrigerated after it is prepared?
3. Is this product safe to consume before it is heated up/cooked? (Notes: A. This is to verify whether or not it is safe to lick the spoon after mixing it up. B. I have the version with the “Neat Egg” included in the mix, not the version that requires real eggs to be mixed in)
4. Is it possible to prepare this product by cooking it in a microwave instead of a pan or regular oven? (If so, please let me know how long to heat in the microwave based on how much mix I used)
5. Does this product react strangely with cheese? (In other words, if I try to make inside-out cheeseburgers out of this, will it separate or end up with an unusual texture?)
6. How long does this product keep after being prepared with water (without oil)?
7. How much water should I add to two servings’ worth of the mix to keep it from being too dry?
I’m hoping someone with a Chowhound account uses this product often enough to be able to answer these questions, but if not, I would also appreciate if someone with a social media account would send these questions (maybe not 7 though, since that’s really a Chowhound question) to Atlantic Foods’ through social media for me.
Here’s some background:
I was interested in this product because I saw it on a shelf in a store. They don’t have a refrigerator (or microwave) that employees can use where I work (or at the previous place that I worked at), and I can’t eat restaurant food because it’s loaded with gluten and soy, so I have a need for nonperishable gluten-free, soy-free food. I have no intentions of becoming a vegetarian or (especially) a vegan (which is why this isn’t posted under vegetarian/vegan), but I also have no idea where to get summer sausage. I like this product’s high fiber content though, so even when I’m not working it can still make a great nutritious snack or side dish, especially if I can make it in the microwave.
