natto (fermented soybeans)

I love Japanese food and even spent some time living in Japan. I just can't figure out why so many Japanese people love natto. Every time I give it the old college try, I can't get over the super gluey texture and the ammonia smell. What is the allure? Am I just not getting it? Do any fellow hounds have any sugggestions or comments?
