I am planning our honeymoon in Italy for late May, and I'm looking for feedback/answers to questions regarding Naples. We will probably rent a car.
We have both been to Rome (twice) and Tuscany (including Florence, Sienna, and everything in between), and we LOVED it (thanks to all the great recs and info on these boards!). I've spent a lot of time reading these boards, parts of Fred Plotkin's book, and checked out some of the posters' personal web sites.
Here's what we're looking for in our honeymoon:
- Our favorite pastas (carbonara, cacio e pepe, amatrciana) or similar foods
- Great cheeses, charcuterie, and pizza (bonus: risotto!)
- Proximity to historical sites
- Romantic vibe
- Warm weather
- Visit cities we haven't been to
We're strongly considering going to Naples due to its proximity to historical sites (Pompeii, Paestum, etc), the romantic Sorrento/Amalfi area, and the supposed birthplace of pizza (not sure I believe that). Plus, it will likely have warmer weather than northern locations. I know risotto is a northern food, so I'm writing that off as very unlikely. It's not a must.
My concern is that we may miss out on our favorite Roman pastas! From what I've read, the food in Naples is lighter with a greater emphasis on seafood. I personally don't like any seafood pastas. Linguine alla Vongole? No thanks. Seafood risotto? Never! Anything with anchovies? Pass.
I've considered locations further north (Parma, Bolonga, Milan), but those don't seem like they'd have the vibe I'm looking for and the weather may not be ideal. I am not considering Venice (seems too touristy).
My questions for the board:
- How prominent are seafood options in the Naples area?
- Is it crazy to think we won't be able to find our Roman favorites in the Naples area?
- Do you have any other location recs that might meet the above criteria?
tl;dr Can I get great carbonara and cacio e pepe in the Naples area? Do I have to eat a lot of seafood if I go to Naples?
