The mysterious origins of salt-and-pepper squid

Hi guys,

I'm doing some research on the origins and provenance of salt-and-pepper squid. I've trawled my Chinese cookbook library and spent ages on Google, but the only things I've been able to establish with any degree of certainty is that (1) the dish is now a true international, almost ubiquituous in every anglophone country in the world, and lots more besides, and (2) it's probably from Canton (Guangzhou, if you will).

Has anyone got any leads?
