Mustard Cafe, San Jose

New breakfast/lunch/coffee place on the Alameda, right across from Atlas St (halfway between Race and Stockton). We had lunch there today. My husband had the roast beef bleu sandwich on baguette, I had a salami and provolone on ciabatta. Sizeable sandwiches, good bread. The salami was the hard Italian kind, sliced super thin. We were both happy campers.

They have coffee drinks, reasonable beer and wine selection for that kind of place, and the usual array of drinks, great looking desserts. The place is light, spacious, clean and pleasant. I guess it just opened and hasn't been discovered, because it wasn't very full, and the people behind the counter seemed to be working stuff out, but they got it all right and everything came quickly. From the menu, it looks to be the first northern CA branch of a so-cal chain, but it's a great addition to the area. It's a head-to-head competitor with Rosalena's, but IMO it has better bread and a classier feel, even though it's very casual.

The breakfast options looked great, and we're very short on breakfast places in downtown SJ. I'll be back there soon.
