Help me, I'm moving to 24th and Mission

david de berkeley | May 13, 200409:03 PM

if you could not tell by the subject line, i'm landing in the mission this week, and i need some basic information. i will not have a car (sniff, sniff), so i will be relying on me ol' legs to get me around.

first things first, grocery stores. are there any major chains nearby? fruterias or carnicerias? farmer's markets? asian grocery stores?

second, restaurants. i feel like i have a fairly good grasp of the taqueria scene in the mission, and from the board it appears that "nuevo latino" (for some reason i hate that term) is the new black. i also am familiar with some of the places around 16th and valencia (tokyo go go, ti couz, luna park, blah blah blah). that said, and besides what has been said on the tip sheet, what places should i keep my eyes peeled for? high-end, sushi, asian, hole-in-the-wall, anything would be appreciated.

third, bars. i went through the sf dive bar thread, and while there was mention of a few bars a little north (500 club is a good bar when not packed with people), i only spotted one bar in my new neighborhood (el rio, which sounds like it could be good). i'm looking for a place where i can drink beer everyday (so this means the special should not be a $3.50 bud light), has a jukebox, and maybe a pool table. good food is a plus but optional. a friend of mine pointed me to some place called the clipper, but i've heard that it is a hard core irish bar.

thanks for any help; i plan to eat out in the neighborhood everyday, so hopefully i'll put together a comprehensive guide in the not-so-distant future.
