Mortars and pestles

So I have owned some mortars and pestles but mostly have been smooth and low sides, and not as useful in a kitchen as I might have liked. Work fine for spices but a curry paste not so much. mole? forget it. So put in your two cents as to what type of mortar should I get my friend for his Natal Day? Clay/stoneware, wood, or classic marble/granite/stone, I have decided it's going to be one of those.
