It was my mother's 78th birthday and I wanted to take her somewhere different (she never ate Korean, let alone do-it-yourself BBQ) so decided on Chez Hwang on Upper Lachine for table-top BBQ.
I called to make reservations and asked for a table with a BBQ unit. The lady on the phone said they all have BBQs, which left me perplexed, but I just said "OK".
I don't get to Chez Hwang often, maybe twice a year, but last time I was there, only select tables had a gas burner built into the table, kinda like this
Arriving last night, only select tables had these units, but none were functional. The waitress said the city demanded they install exhaust hoods or cease and desist the in-table units.
We grilled on a butane powered tabletop stove instead.
Do any Montreal area Korean joints still offer the in-table BBQ? Anyone know about the new place on St. Catherine Seoul Chako?
Does anyone know why the city would demand a hood for the in-table unit, but not for the table-top? Is it a matter of BTUs and exhaust? Natural gaz vs. butane? I would assume its not for particulates in the air as you get the same regardless of which system you grill on.
