Help! Mom's 50th Bday Dinner

Violet1044 | Mar 26, 2008 03:36 AM

Hi everyone I would really appreciate any and all advice I can get. For my mom's 50th birthday my family is traveling to Chicago (none of us have ever been). I have been doing extensive amounts of research (to the point that it is driving me insane!) and have finally narrowed it down to the following restaurants: MK, Onesixty Blue, Aigre Doux, and Spring. (I also considered Blackbird, however I don't think it has the more intimate atmosphere we are looking for). Although I would love to eat at all of the higher end places (Everest, Tru, etc.) there will be 5 of us so this would be a bit too expensive (If we do decide to do a pricer prix fixe meal one night I have already decided on Arun's). Basically I am looking for a fabulous meal that it sure to be a great and memorable experience. The mixed reviews for places like Aigre Doux make me nervous because it is her 50th bday and I don't want anything to go wrong. I will also add that my family likes more innovative cuisine and we are not afraid of interesting, exotic flavors (for example, plain grilled fish with a side of vegetables- although it may be delicious, is a bit boring for our tastes). Excessively tiny portions are also a huge peeve of ours. Sorry for the long post but any help is greatly appreciated because I have been agonizing over this decision for weeks!
