For my birthday last Sunday I took my family into the city early. I love parking free all day and got a spot near the corner of 14th St and 2nd Ave and we walked one block over to Momofuku Milk Bar to start the day. We had the place to ourselves for a few minutes and we ordered a Volcano, an English muffin, a slice of brownie pie, a slice of candy bar pie, a cereal milk, a chocolate milk and two coffees. Everything was enjoyed by all, with the muffin and the brownie pie standing out as the best things. We bought a half dozen assorted cookies to go and headed up 2nd Ave.
My young daughter wanted "some real food" so we stopped into Dunkin Donuts and watched her eat a bagel with cream cheese. But, even with this stop, we were still too early for Kalustyan's to be open as we passed. So we continued uptown to Grand Central Station where we made a beeline for Murray's. I read on the board here that they had some Iberico and we shared an eigth of a pound - nice pig!
Then we turned around and walked back to Kalustyan's where we shared some soup and hummus and bought a few ingredients to stuff into the backpack with the cookies from MMB. From there we walked west so we could do a little clothes shopping and then made a left on 9th Ave. We headed towards Chelsea Market, but my son wanted something "American" to eat as he wasn't sure he would like our upcoming early dinner, so we stopped into Pop Burger for a few sliders and he was happy. We added another food item or two to our already overstuffed backpack at the Market and then headed east on 15th St.
Throwing the backpack in the van we made it to Momofuku Ssam Bar around 4:00. It was wine and beer for the adults and root beer for the kids as we rubbed our tired feet and relaxed. Some bread and butter and pickles tickled our appetites as we drank. Next we shared a bánh mì, which the adults loved. After the sandwich came Greens in XO sauce, Rice Cakes with Sausage, and a big bowl of Brisket. The kids surprised me by gobbling up the rice cakes with my normally food conservative son declaring them the best thing he had ever eaten.
All in all it was a foodilicious day. And when we finally made it home we all sat down and shared some cookies from MMB and put a candle in one.
